What is an Educational Therapist?

  • Educational therapists teach students how to learn.  They are special educators who empower students, building their self-confidence and self-esteem.
  • Educational Therapists have undergone unique training in specialized techniques designed to remediate learning disabilities, improve processing, and teach compensatory skills.
  • An educational therapist works from both formal and informal assessments, tailoring intervention plans aligned with a student’s key strengths and areas of challenge.
  • Educational therapy offers intensive one-to-one instruction in a professional and private therapeutic setting.
  • Educational therapists work closely with other involved professionals and schoolteachers, and they develop a close, trusting relationship with the child and family.
  • Educational therapy demystifies learning and stimulates a student’s awareness of their unique abilities allowing them to confidently approach any subject with the proper tools to be successful.

What is an Executive Functions Specialist?

  • An Executive Functions Specialist works with children, adolescents, and young adults with ADD/ADHD and executive function deficits along with their parents. 
  • They teach compensatory techniques and create awareness of learning styles and executive function strengths and challenges.
  • The skills taught include: planning and prioritizing, calendar and agenda book use, backpack and binder organization, time-management, test-taking, and study skills. 
  • The goals are to develop a strong sense of self-worth, the ability for the student to self-advocate, to establish the use of external tools, and to practice new behaviors.

      How do I know if ET or EF is needed?

      The need for educational therapy and/or executive functions may be identified in a number of waysIf your child or adolescent has never been identified by specialists or school personnel:
      • You may have had early indicators when your child was very young, such as early ear infections, difficulty with maintaining concentration on a task, problems remembering, delay in learning language, or problems paying attention.
      • Your child or adolescent may come home from school and tell you, “I’m stupid.  I hate school!  I don’t get what I am supposed to do.”  You see a loss of self-esteem regarding school performance.
      • Your child or adolescent may resist going to school, or participating in normal childhood activities.
      • You may have concerns based on observation of your child or adolescent that all is not right with his or her ability to learn, or to benefit from school. 
      • Your child or adolescent may take an extreme amount of time and parent support getting homework tasks done. 
      • You see ongoing struggles with homework and school assignments that may increase as schoolwork becomes more difficult.
      • You see a sudden onset of frustration with school and homework. 
      • You see discouragement and withdrawal. 

      If your child or adolescent has been identified by specialists or school personnel: 
      • School personnel such as a classroom teacher, the school psychologist, or the speech and language specialist may already have identified your child or adolescent as a struggling learner.  However, he or she may require additional individualized interventions beyond those now received. 
      • Your child or adolescent is receiving services from multiple specialists, and you need assistance in coordinating services. 
      • You need assistance in interpreting reports and recommendations from various specialists who work with your child.

      Who can benefit from educational therapy?

      Any student, ages five through adult, can benefit.  Students who are taught how to learn through demystifying the process of learning will increase their confidence, allowing them to become more efficient, empowered and successful students.
